OpenAI launched ChatGPT advertising in the UK on 6 June 2026. ThursdayThinking.ai helps UK businesses build the organic AI foundation that makes paid placements work, then sets up and runs campaigns in the self-serve Ads Manager.
OpenAI's VP of Monetisation Benji Shomair confirmed the UK launch via LinkedIn on 6 June 2026. The UK is the first European market and the fifth geography to receive the pilot, following the US in February 2026 and Canada, Australia and New Zealand in March 2026.
The US pilot crossed $100 million in annualised revenue within six weeks of launch. OpenAI has since added self-serve buying, cost-per-click bidding, geographic targeting, and a Conversions API. The UK launch inherits these features, and the self-serve Ads Manager beta opened to UK advertisers around 19 June 2026.
ChatGPT ads are clearly labelled and appear beneath the AI-generated answer — not inside it. Each unit includes the advertiser name, favicon, headline (approximately 16 characters), description copy (approximately 32 characters), a URL and an image. The conversational context means relevance is everything — a poorly matched ad in this environment performs worse than on any other platform.
Ads reach ChatGPT users on the Free and Go tiers only. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise subscribers see no advertising at all. Roughly 85% of ChatGPT users are eligible to see ads — but fewer than 20% encounter one on any given day during the pilot phase. The audience is large but skews away from the platform's highest-engagement professional users.
This is the most important thing to understand. Running a ChatGPT ad does not make ChatGPT recommend your business in its organic answers. Paid placements and organic citations are entirely separate systems. If your business is not already appearing in ChatGPT answers organically, an ad will not change that. GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) is what builds organic AI visibility — ads are an additional layer on top of it.
OpenAI began rolling out its self-serve Ads Manager beta to UK advertisers around 19 June 2026, two weeks after ChatGPT ads went live in the UK. Businesses can now open an account at openai.com/advertisers and create campaigns directly. The tools are still in beta and changing quickly, so early advertisers learn while competition is still thin.
ChatGPT ads are not Google Ads with a different logo. The format is structurally different — shorter copy constraints, conversational context, and an audience that is actively working through a decision rather than scanning a list of results. Criteo has reported that ChatGPT referrals converted at roughly 1.5 times the rate of other channels. Treat that as a directional signal, not a guaranteed benchmark.
The measurement piece is still maturing. OpenAI launched a Conversions API on 5 May 2026, but the depth of post-click reporting that performance advertisers expect from Google and Meta is still being built. For UK performance marketers, that measurement gap is a practical constraint on budget allocation until it matures.
Most importantly: the businesses that will get the most from ChatGPT ads are the ones that have already done the foundational work. Organic AI visibility — being cited in ChatGPT answers without paying for it — makes every pound of paid spend work harder. A brand that ChatGPT already knows and trusts will outperform a brand buying its first impression in a conversational context.
We test your current organic visibility in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Copilot and Claude. You see exactly where you appear, where competitors appear, and what the gaps are. This is your baseline before any paid activity.
Get Your Free AuditWe fix the organic AI visibility signals — entity clarity, schema markup, content structure, topical authority and AI crawler access. This is what makes ChatGPT cite your business in answers without you paying for it. It is also what makes your paid ads land in a more receptive context.
See How GEO WorksWe help UK businesses register with OpenAI's advertiser programme, understand the format constraints (16-character headlines, 32-character descriptions), prepare creative that works in a conversational context, and build the measurement infrastructure before your first campaign goes live.
Book a Call with SamThere is no official UK pricing at launch. Early US CPMs ran around $60 in the scarcity phase before falling to approximately $25 by April 2026. CPC bidding launched in the US at a recommended starting bid of $3 to $5 per click. UK pricing will emerge as access opens — treat all figures above as directional benchmarks from the US market, not guaranteed UK rates.
